Disclaimer: At A New Beginning, we are committed to using current, respectful, and accurate language when referring to adoption and the women, children, and families it touches. However, we recognize that many women who are beginning to explore adoption may not yet be familiar with these terms. Our blog posts are written with the goal of meeting women where they are in their search process—using language that feels accessible, while still honoring the dignity and experiences of everyone involved.

If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy and considering adoption, one of the biggest questions you may have is: “Can I choose who adopts my baby?”
The answer is yes — absolutely. At A New Beginning, we believe that every expectant parent deserves a voice in the adoption process. That includes choosing the family you feel is the best fit for your child.

Here’s how the process works — and how we support you every step of the way.

Step 1: Contact us, and meet with an adoption specialist

The first step is to talk with a trained, compassionate adoption specialist. You don’t need to have made any decisions yet — we’re here to talk through your options and support whatever path you choose.

If you decide that adoption is right for you, your specialist will help guide you through the next steps — including choosing a family.

Step 2: Look Through Family Profiles

You’ll be given access to adoptive family profile books — these are beautiful, photo-filled books that tell the story of each family hoping to adopt.
You’ll get to see:

  • Pictures of the prospective adoptive parents, their children (if applicable) and their home
  • Why they are adopting
  • Their parenting values
  • Any religious or non religious practices in the home
  • Hobbies, pets, traditions, and more
  • What they are wanting in an open or semi-open adoption

Every family has been thoroughly screened and approved through background checks, home inspections, education and much more. You can review as many profiles as you want — and you’ll never be rushed or pressured.

Step 3: Choose to Meet a Family (or More Than One)

If a family stands out to you, you can choose to meet them in person or virtually or can simply select from their book if you do not want to meet them. Some expectant parents talk with more than one family before making a decision — others just know after one meeting.

This is your choice. Your adoption specialist can be with you during meetings, helping things feel comfortable and supportive.

Step 4: Build the Relationship (If You Want To)

Many expectant mothers choose open or semi-open adoption, where there’s a written agreement with the agency for future contact — like photo updates, phone calls, or even visits. Others prefer a more private or closed adoption.

There’s no right or wrong way – just what feels right to you. If you choose ongoing contact, we’ll help facilitate communication and set healthy expectations with the adoptive family.
